Today in Junior Infants we worked so hard. We have been learning all about different materials. We have learnt that glass is created with sand and that plastic comes from Oil.

Today we did an experiment to find our what material would make the best coat. We looked at the materials and predicted what would happen.

We then tested our materials. Have a look below to see how we got on.

Tinfoil and clingfilm worked the best!
Two groups thought the paper worked and two thought it didn't so it was a tie!
Tissue did not work at all.

A Fun Opportunity for Our Class!

Dear parents and guardians,
In 2018, our school joined 5 other Educate Together schools in forming a ‘Digital Cluster’ - a group of like-minded schools with a vision for building supports for Educate Together schools nationally, in delivering our Ethical Education curriculum. This cluster of schools was able to tap into a funding opportunity provided by the Department of Education, on the basis that the focus of our work would be digital in nature.

We are now in the third and final year of this collaborative project, and our community has benefited from being a part of the creation of a digital repository for teaching and learning resources. Staff members have engaged in CPD on relevant software, platforms and apps, and our school has been able to add to our ICT infrastructure in the form of a class set of Chromebooks and cameras.

Towards the end of this academic year, our cluster of schools; as well as others around the country; will be represented at an education exhibition of all of the initiatives that have been linked with this grant. Our cluster will share with other teachers, our experiences of building an extensive repository of teaching resources, as well as of the impact that the cameras and chromebooks have had on our ability to engage with learning in a modern, meaningful way.

In December and January, as part of a learning unit around perspective taking and empathy, Aoife B’s 4th class aim to complete a unit of basic photography skills. The idea is that 4th class pupils would take photographs of Junior Infant pupils (Sarah L’s class) at play, from a distance, unnamed. Aoife’s class would then partake in creative writing/art using the photographs as a stimulus. These photos would be taken in an outdoor setting, with physical distancing observed. This work will be shared on Sarah’s and Aoife’s class websites, as well as potentially being displayed at the above-mentioned exhibition in 2021. Your child’s name will not be published alongside their picture.

We hope you support this Educate Together digital learning project by giving permission for your child to be involved. Children for whom we do not have permission will play in a slightly different space for the duration of the photography session. Please complete the form below by Wednesday 16 December to indicate whether you give permission for your child or not.

We look forward to sharing the pupils’ project work with you.

Many thanks and kind regards,
Aoife Blood                         Sarah Low

We took part in a student council's proposal to decorate rocks to add to our garden. This is how we did it !

We planned the designs for our rocks. We then painted our beautiful designs.

Giving our rocks a home!
We brought our lovely rocks out to our garden.
We each picked a great spot for our rocks.
We had a great time doing this.
Thanks student council for the great idea.
We loved seeing our rocks the next day :)

Last week we experimented with printing.
We used a variety of materials to create amazing designs.
We used sponges, lids, empty containers and cups to create our fantastic designs. We had so much fun exploring the different textures and patterns we could create.
Our creations are proudly displayed in the corridor outside our room!

In maths we have been learning all about 2D shapes.
We made rockets and houses using 2D shapes.
We used rectangles, triangles, squares and circles to make our lovely work.

We practiced making the shapes using popsicle sticks. We counted the corners and the sides of the shapes we were making.

We love learning about shapes.

Positive affirmations are a powerful way to help you develop a mindset of positivity and success! How cool. Today we repeated some positive affirmations together.
We said
I am smart
I am strong
I am brave
I am kind
I am a good friend.

It is important to remind ourselves how amazing we are.
Below is the work we completed!
Look at the affirmations we selected for ourselves.

Normally we practice our fine motor skills on Fridays.
We didn't get to do it last week so we did it today (Monday).
Working on our fine motor skills are very important, they make our hands nice and strong.

We changed our activities this week.
Our new activities are..
1. Popping bubble wrap
2. Screwing jar lids
3.Threading buttons
4.Placing pom poms and beads over the designs on the sheets.
5. Counting diamonds and snowballs.

We love fine motor Fridays (Monday)!

Our world is important, we need to take care of it!

Today we talked about how important the world is.
We talked about how we need to take care of our planet.
We can take care of our planet by reducing the amount of things we waste, reusing things we already have and recycling things that can be recycled.
Today we painted the background of our world. On Monday we will add green paper. The green paper will be the countries.
